Greater Tuna
Kilgore, Texas - 2017
Directed by Elizabeth Melton
Director's Note:
Everything’s bigger in Texas! Well, everything except Tuna. A small country town in Texas, Tuna is a place where everything is a contradiction; where the people are both small-minded and filled with a BIG love for Texas. This play was written over thirty years ago when the country imagined we were living in a “colorblind” world, there was no social media, and T.V. was filled with more sitcoms than reality shows.Greater Tuna is a satirical representation of white, rural Texas, but presenting it today is a very different experience for contemporary actors and audiences. I encourage you to consider this question: what happens to satire when our everyday reality seems so extreme? We hope you enjoy our representation of Tuna’s world and that it inspires you to think about how we know and understand our lives in East Texas.
